Aside from humidification a traditional CRAC unit consumes energy as follows:
Evaporator Fans – 17%
Condenser Fans – 13%
Compressor – 70%

The initial energy improvements begin at the evaporator fan. The Liebert DSE uses the most efficient EC Plug Fans available for variable speed air flow control. This matched with remote temperature sensors in the datacenter improves efficiency by 15%. This way only the amount of cooling air necessary is moved for datacenter cooling. Although EC Fans have been used for years in chilled water systems, Liebert was the first to use them in refrigerant based cooling for datacenters.

Next, in the condenser fans, new microchannel condensers are used that have a much higher surface area and require less airflow than traditional condensers which contributes another 10% energy savings. That leads us to the key energy efficiency gain – at the compressor. The compressor consumes 70% of datacenter cooling energy, and until now there has been no way to avoid it. But Liebert introduced Econophase! Econophase utilizes a refrigerant pump in the refrigerant circuit that uses 1/20th the energy of the compressor. When the outside air temperature drops to 65F the Liebert DSE turns off the compressor and operates the Econophase pump. This simple change saves another 35% of energy costs in datacenter cooling! In fact, the energy required to operate a datacenter designed with Liebert DSE systems is equal to or lower than energy required for operating a large chilled water system for datacenter cooling. Imagine that, more redundancy based on individual systems and lower cost than a chilled water system.
